The Connection to Heart Disease

Handling moments & the choices they present will take you towards or away from chronic disease states, many of them killers. Managing choice is key to lifestyle change...Elizabeth Bohorquez, RN, C.Ht

Many of my patients have had heart disease for many years, and have to watch their cholesterol. They often ask me about foods that are low in fat, noticing that they are high in sugar. For many, this presents a quagmire, but truly this is a supermarket problem and not a healthy food problem.

My patients are talking about processed foods, as if these were the only foods on the face of the earth. Begin to think outside of the box, the bag, the freezer container and the can. It is here that you will find a great choice of natural foods that are delicious as well. Protein choices can be high fat, medium or low. It's amazing to me how many people think that protein only means high fat. In fact, many people don't even know the different types of protein that are available. In the food chapters of this book you will be introduced to the entire group. As far as vegetables are concerned, there are so many wonderful choices, all completely free of fat and refined sugar. While some of them do have a higher sugar value than others, once you learn how to balance that out for your own needs, you will be on the winning team. This doesn't mean that you can never have something that's been processed, but it is a good idea to learn how to eat without those choices. Then you will be able to put them back in a healthier balance for yourself.

Sugar is connected to heart disease, just as it is connected to circulatory disease and high cholesterol. Everything is connected. It is very important to keep an eye on all risk factors and work to develop a healthy lifestyle plan. Even though some of my patients may have a diagnosis of heart disease, it’s important to realize that their life can either get better or worse. All will depend on how they choose to handle their choices and their moments. Managing healthy nutrition, staying away from nicotine and other substances like caffeine & sugar, cutting back on alcohol or taking it out completely, as well as managing ongoing stress will keep them on a healthier path, even though they already have a diagnosis of heart disease.
